How it All Began.... |
|
My name is Sarah Hulme. I am a student at Moorlands Bible College. I went out to Kenya with
SWYM
to help with a youth camp in Nairobi Summer 2003. This was being run by
PYM.
The camp was for deprived children and teenagers. While there
I met Catherine Omanyo who is the headmistress of a secondary
school where the profit from fee paying pupils allows other children
(including orphans who are also housed) to receive secondary
education. The school had been running for about a year and
was struggling for funds to continue to survive and also funds to
improve the facilities. Catherine talked a bit about her aims and
ambitions for Imprezza school and what she was trying to achieve and
why.
After the camp had finished the SWYM group did various things. I visited Imprezza Secondary School. This obviously struck a chord with me, that Catherine, on an absolute shoe string was running this secondary school. Giving either free secondary education or only charging what people could afford. Those who were able to pay full price subsidised the others. The school had so few and very poor facilities that "rich parents" were starting to take their children away which of course affected others. I came back from Kenya and got straight into fund raising to improve facilities and allow the school to carry on with its very good work offering educational opportunities to poor/orphan children. Due to the success of the initial fund raising, new toilets have been built, a science lab built and equipped, the whole school now has modern desks - one for each pupil, prior to this they sat on chairs with notes taken on their knees. A library has just been built, and at times money has had to go to the running of the school, paying the rent etc. just to allow it to survive.
