NEW! CD From the Children at Stokeinteignhead Primary
|
In Kenya although the government now makes a contribution towards secondary education costs many schools/pupils including Imprezza do not receive it. (It has been described by many in Kenya as help for the richer family) Primary education is state funded, however unless you have a permanent address, can afford school uniform and shoes and can supply your own paper, books, pens pencils etc. you cannot attend. In practice many pupils are excluded because of lack of money. As we are located in what is acknowledged to be the poorest part of Kenya with 75% of population living in absolute poverty and over 55% in food poverty this is a huge problem for everyone. Imprezza does not place any financial restrictions on pupils attending and supplies school meals free of charge (the state does not fund meals). Our class and school size reflect the high level of pastoral care needed by the pupils and we will not expand beyond about 40 in a primary class and 35 in a secondary class with a maximum of two classes per year. We would want to open more schools rather than go for "economies of scale" with a large school which our experience has shown would not benefit the pupils. Our aim with Imprezza is to develop this Academy to its full potential, then open others in both rural and town environments. Because some students are orphans, or in rural areas the distance travelled to school is so great some of the schools will have to have a boarding facility. Upon leaving school we sponsor students where necessary through University and for those not attending and eligible, we operate a micro finance scheme to allow them to set up in a small business or become self employed having received appropriate training. Unemployment is around 65% so it is pointless giving an education and then abandoning the students with no prospects. Equal opportunities in all areas are offered to both male and female students. We also work to improve the health and welfare of the students and where possible their families.
